But\u00a0enough with the geography lesson you didn\u2019t ask for. Guadeloupe is as much about culture as I can proudly say I am Creole. Brace yourselves,\u00a0King Bey isn\u2019t the epitome of Creole identity.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guadeloupe is creole<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Creole<\/em> is just a generic word\u00a0to talk about Caribbean culture in general and it\u2019s tightly linked to the European colonisation of the area. It basically comes from an old Spanish word creollo<\/em> which refers to someone born in the New World<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Creollo<\/em>\u00a0itself derives from the old Portuguese word criado<\/em>, meaning servant<\/em>.\u00a0See where I\u2019m going with this<\/a>?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Long story short, creole just means you come from a complex historical\u00a0background<\/strong>. For example, Guadeloupe was at first a prized possession the Spanish, the English and the French vividly fought for. Even the <\/span>Swedes <\/span>owned the island\u00a0for a couple of weeks! <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The few remaining Natives, African slaves of all horizons, Europeans and later, Indians were forced to coexist and find ways to understand each other<\/strong>. That is why creole<\/em>\u00a0is also a spoken language.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
