Secrets We Kept: Three Women of Trinidad, @krystalsital Pluie et vent sur Télumée Miracle, Simone Schwarz-Bart Cantique des Tourterelles, Ernest Pépin @author_ytm made her life mission to make sure Caribbean children feel represented in a world where they're often asked to tone themselves down to better 'fit in'. But the most surprising aspect of writing for children, might be how much adults around them benefit too! Her large portion of her following comprises of parents and grandparents as much as people without kids who were able to heal their wounded inner children through stories that make them feel right at home. Everyone has a defining moment in their lives; a revelation that will change the course of their personal history. Hearing Jamaican poet Lorna Goodison talk about the life-altering impact of simply telling one's story was such a moment for @author_ytm. Inspired, the young writer will go on to publish Obayifo, a poetry book and the very step of her prolific writing career. Last month I was extremely lucky to meet children's book author @author_ytm. The Toronto-based Guyanese writer has the most infectious personality and it's with humour and tenderness that we discuss her journey from self published poet to agented author beloved by Caribbean kids and adults alike. For Yolanda, there is nothing more important than representation - a realisation that motherhood precipitated. Since 'Keman’s First Carnival', published in 2016, the artist has not stopped, keeping one thing in mind: making sure Caribbean kids feel seen and loved for who they are.
